Inter in the Homestretch of Martinez Deal with Genoa

Josep Martinez has left the other options in the dust and is destined to join Inter. The two clubs are putting the finishing touches on his transfer. They will meet later this week to complete the final steps, La Gazzetta dello Sport informed.

The package will include a player. The Nerazzurri have offered four youngsters: Martin Satriano, Gaetano Pio Oristanio, Matteo Zanotti, and Francesco Pio Esposito. Genoa have asked for a few days to evaluate. The structure of the operation will allow the Scudetto winners to spend very little this summer. They did something similar with Sassuolo last year, sending Samuele Mulattieri to Sassuolo while purchasing Davide Frattesi.

Inter would like to have a buy-back clause for any talent moving to Genoa in exchange for Josep Martinez. In the end, the goalkeeper will be worth €15/18M depending on the valuations of the makeweight and bonuses.

The goalkeeper has agreed to a five-year contract with €1.5M wages. The Nerazzurri pivoted toward him after failing to concur to a deal with Athletico Paranaense for Bento. They also mulled Udinese’s Maduka Okoye.

The Italian champions can’t really pursue Albert Gudmundsson at this stage. However, this acquisition will keep the communication channel open.

Our Take on Inter and Josep Martinez

He’s a fine player, but he’s not a prodigy and isn’t better than Yann Sommer and might not be in the next couple of years. Their meager budget again forces them to move on from more enticing targets they stared at for months. They wound up grabbing whomever decent enough available at an affordable cost.
