Serie A champions Inter are taking steps to beat Lazio to the signature of sought-after Hellas Verona defender Juan Cabal. According to La Repubblica via FCInter1908, Simone Inzaghi’s men have ‘initiated contact’ with the Gialloblu regarding information for the 23-year-old.
Despite joining the Cabal hunt relatively late, Inter are hellbent on leapfrogging Lazio in the queue. Talks between the teams are up and running, with the Nerazzurri looking to sign the Colombian youngster on loan with an obligation to buy.
Verona president Maurizio Setti has set a €10 million price tag for his in-demand defender. While Inter are reluctant to pay that money upfront, they’d commit to meeting Verona’s request at the end of next season. That would effectively propel them past Lazio.
Indeed, Claudio Lotito made it abundantly clear that he’s unwilling to go beyond €7m. He tried to capture Cabal during the clubs’ negotiations for Tijjani Noslin. However, negotiations have fallen apart, opening the door for Inter to swoop in and take the Colombian to Giuseppe Meazza.
Cabal isn’t the only name on Beppe Marotta’s shortlist. Ricardo Rodriguez is another option for Inter after departing Torino as a free agent at the end of last season. Marotta is on the lookout for a left-handed defender. That’s because the Nerazzurri have lost Tajon Buchanon to a long-term injury.
Buchanan broke his tibia at the 2024 Copa America. He will not return to the playing ground until deep into the 2024/25 season. Therefore, Inter must address the lack of numbers at left-back, a position Cabal has proved capable of covering.
