Inter – Juventus Player Ratings: Barella Stuns the Champs

In the much-anticipated Derby d’Italia, Inter hosted their historical rivals Juventus at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milano. Arturo Vidal opened the scoring for the home side against his former club which enabled Antonio Conte’s men to torture the visitors for the rest of the match through counter attacks, and Nicolò Barella’s strike gave the Nerazzurri a much deserved 2-0 victory. So here are our player ratings for top Serie A clash between Inter and Juventus.

Inter XI

Samir Handanovic – 6.5

The Slovenian veteran probably expected a much more difficult night, but earned his clean sheet with a spectacular save on Chiesa late in the match.

Milan Skriniar – 7.5

A dominant performance from the Slovakia international who gave a torrid time for Morata and Ronaldo.

Stefan De Vrij – 7

The former Lazio man marshalled the Inter backline with ease and confidence as he denied the Juventus strikers from getting any meaningful attempts at goal.

Alessandro Bastoni – 8.5

The 21-year-old was among the best performers of the match. Made several key interceptions at the back, and created the Beneamata’s second goal with a fabulous long ball to Barella.

Achraf Hakimi – 6.5

The former Real Madrid academy product caused the Bianconeri trouble with his dangerous runs, but his influence decreased in the second half.

Arturo Vidal – 7.5

The Chilean warrior put his slow start to the season behind him as he delivered what is arguably his best performance in the famous Nerazzurri jersey. Took his header well to open the scoring for Inter, and won countless duels against the Juventus midfielders.

Marcelo Brozović – 6.5

The Croatian midfielder anchored the play from deep which allowed Vidal and Barella to go forward. Nonetheless, his shooting could have been a little better.

Nicolò Barella – 9

A stunning performance from the Italy international. Created his side’s the first goal with a lovely cross for Vidal, took his shot brilliantly as he doubled the lead, and generally was a step ahead of Bentancur and Rabiot all night long.

Ashley Young – 6.5

A solid if unspectacular performance from the English veteran. Helped in closing down the spaces on Chiesa and tried to support the attacks without neglecting his defensive duties.

Lautaro Martinez – 6.5

The Argentine striker worked really hard during the match and linked up well with his teammates, but somehow failed to score despite receiving several golden opportunities.

Romelu Lukaku – 7

The Belgian giant caused havoc inside the Juventus areas every time he received the ball, and enjoyed a legendary battle against Chiellini. He could have had a goal or two if it wasn’t for Szczęsny’s saves.

Inter Substitutes

Matteo Darmian – 6.5

Entered the pitch to close down Juve’s right flank on Kulusevski and Chiesa and did his job well.

Roberto Gagliardini – N/A

Alexis Sanchez – N/A

Juventus XI

Wojciech Szczęsny – 7

The Polish man was easily the best Bianconeri player on Sunday as he tried his best to keep his side in the match for as long as possible.

Danilo – 5

The Brazilian was the culprit on the first goal when he allowed Vidal to beat him for the header and his performance didn’t really improve from there. Didn’t offer much going forward either.

Leonardo Bonucci – 5.5

The Italian defender had a tough time containing Martinez, and didn’t look too solid, while his usual distribution from the back was non-existent.

Giorgio Chiellini – 5.5

The captain had his ups and downs against Lukaku and while he was able to deny his foe, he ended showing his age as he was beaten on multiple occasions.

Gianluca Frabotta – 5

Despite being able to deny Hakimi on some occasions, the young full-back could have done better to block Barella’s cross on the first goal. He was also unable to catch the Inter midfielder’s run as Juventus conceded the second goal.

Federico Chiesa – 5.5

The former Fiorentina man could have earned an even lower rating as he was nowhere to be seen for most of the match, but it was obvious that he’s far from being completely fit to start. His late shot was the most dangerous opportunity for his team throughout the 90 minutes.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 5

Another under-par display from the Uruguayan who completely lost the midfield battle and failed to drive the ball forward.

Adrien Rabiot – 4.5

The former PSG man was chasing the shadows of Barella and Martinez throughout the match. A night to forget for the young Frenchman.

Aaron Ramsey – 6

The Welshman was arguably the player who tried the most for Juventus. Pressed up the field and then pushed back to help his teammates in defense, but couldn’t really change much in the outcome of the match.

Alvaro Morata – 5

Another Juventus player who didn’t seem to be fit to start the match against Inter. The Spanish striker suffered against the opposition backline and never threatened to score.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 5

One of the Portuguese’s worst displays in a Bianconeri jersey. His decision making was poor and his touch was completely off. Easily contained by the likes of Skriniar and De Vrij.

Juventus Substitutes

Weston McKennie – 6

He brought some much needed enthusiasm after his introduction, but it was too little too late, as the match was already lost at that point.

Dejan Kulusevski – 5.5

Tried to make something going on the right flank, but Damian was introduced to deny him.

Federico Bernardeschi – 5

Introduced by Andrea Pirlo in order to revive the left flank, but his presence was barely ever noticed.
