Inter Keeper Yann Sommer Defends Italian Football Amid Euro 2024 Exit

Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer is adamant Italian football is ‘not in crisis’ despite an underwhelming Euro 2024 last-16 elimination. Switzerland dominated Italy through and through in Berlin and ran out 2-0 winners to end Gli Azzurri’s bid to become only the second team to defend the title after Spain.

Saturday’s clash at the Olympiastadion was a familiar environment for Sommer. He spent most of the 2023/24 Serie A season as a ‘spectator,’ with Inter steamrolling to the Scudetto as the division’s most impressive defensive team. Switzerland did the same against Italy.

Restricted to a single shot on target, Luciano Spalletti’s underachievers never put the Inter veteran to the test. But despite being utterly outclassed, Sommer believes the Italians have no reason to panic, insisting Italy and Serie A boast plenty of potential.

Asked whether Italian football is in crisis, the Inter keeper replied: “I don’t think so, no. Italy are a great team, but today we played really well. I know Serie A well and there is a lot of quality in this squad,” via Calciomercato.

Sommer praised Switzerland’s outstanding performance. The Inter man maintains his team could make it out of the quarter-finals if they repeat this performance, waxing lyrical about the Swiss’ proactive approach.

It is very positive for us, we played well against a great team and I am very happy. Our performance was excellent, so it was very difficult for Italy to get back into the game today because we were very aggressive and had quality on the ball,” the Inter star added.

If this is our performance in the next game, then we have a very good chance of doing well.
