Inter Legend Backs New Nerazzurri Signing to Better Hakimi

Inter great Giuseppe Bergomi, who currently works as a pundit at Sky Sports Italia and also occasionally commentates, has bestowed words of great praise for new Nerazzurri signing Denzel Dumfries.

The former PSV Eindhoven wing back was brought in as a direct replacement for Achraf Hakimi, who was extremely instrumental in Inter’s run for the Scudetto title in 2020/21 – the club’s first in over a decade.

The 25-year-old Dutch international was arguably the Netherlands’ brightest player in a disappointing EURO 2020 tournament and immediately caught the attention of Inter’s player recruitment network.

Beppe Bergomi compared the Dutchman to Hakimi – backing Dumfries to play as pivotal a role as his predecessor did last season, helping launch defense-splitting attacks from the right wing.

Speaking from the Sky Sports Italia studios (via FCInterNews) during the Sky Calcio Club programme, Bergomi said: “Inter need Denzel Dumfries. His accelerations can break apart opposition lines. He is a bit like Hakimi but I’m sure he can do better defensively because with PSV he played in a back four.”

Lukaku and Hakimi formed a lethal partnership on the right wing as Antonio Conte’s men were breathtakingly incisive in tearing apart opponents with counter attacks.

“Inter needed players with pace after the departure of Lukaku and Hakimi. Now, they should find different ways to attack,” he added.

Dumfries has already appeared in four matches for the Nerazzurri, registering 153 minutes in total so far.
