Inter icon Marco Materazzi has slammed Chelsea outcast Romelu Lukaku amid growing speculation linking him with a move to Napoli. New Partenopei boss Antonio Conte is desperate to reunite with his ex-Nerazzurri pupil at the Diego Maradona Stadium.
Napoli and Milan are the two most genuine suitors for Lukaku. However, last season’s Serie A runners-up would reportedly pursue the Belgium international’s services only on favorable terms. Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee remains the San Siro outfit’s prime objective.
On the other hand, Napoli could go all-out to sign Lukaku, as Conte wants him in Naples. The charismatic manager reinvigorated the robust striker’s career at Giuseppe Meazza following his nightmarish spell at Manchester United. He now looks to do the same at the Maradona Stadium.
But Materazzi is seemingly no fan of Lukaku. He may resent the 31-year-old for ditching Inter, insisting Simone Inzaghi’s men are better off with Marcus Thuram than the former Man United flop.
“Lukaku has gone round the houses, we’ll see where he ends up this time, but he is the one who always makes the decision,” Materazzi said amid Napoli links, as quoted by FCInterNews.
“The fact remains, so far the only place he won anything was at Inter. He was happy there, he should regret leaving and admit it was a mistake.
“Things have changed now, we have Marcus Thuram who is one of the best strikers in Italy along with Lautaro Martinez, we signed Mehdi Taremi and have a very strong squad. The regrets are certainly for Lukaku to have, not Inter.“
