Former Juventus and Milan head coach Fabio Capello has heaped praise on Inter over the acquisition of Robin Gosens from Atalanta. The defending Serie A champions have signed the Germany international on a half-season loan with an obligation to buy in the summer.
Despite experiencing an injury-hit first half of the season at Atalanta, Gosens remains one of the most highly-rated left wing-backs in Europe, let alone Serie A. Despite Germany’s underwhelming tournament, the 27-year-old’s impressive exploits at Euro 2020 earned him a host of admirers across Europe.
Barcelona and several Premier League clubs were linked with a move for Gosens before Inter stepped up their interest in the final days of the January transfer window. It feels like his late arrival at Giuseppe Meazza has come somewhat abruptly, even though the Nerazzurri have had long-term affection for the attacking-minded defender.
But it is no surprise that Inter went for Gosens at full bore, considering Ivan Perisic’s uncertain future in Lombardy. The long-serving Croatia international is likely to depart in the summer when his contract runs out.
Though the Nerazzurri long seemed to be in pole position to sign Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic, they’ve performed a U-turn on their transfer plans down the final stretch of the winter transfer window. Having ended up landing Gosens, Inter have solved problems on the left-hand side for the foreseeable future, at least per Capello.
“Inter signed Gosens with a view to the Champions League, but also to future seasons,” he said, as relayed by SempreInter. “It’s an investment for the present, but also for the future.“
Gosens had been a permanent first-team fixture in Bergamo before picking up a nasty hamstring injury in late September. He has not featured in Serie A since Atalanta’s 2-2 draw with non-other than Inter back in late September.
It is still uncertain whether he’ll be ready for the upcoming Derby della Madonnina against Milan. But Inter are hopeful of having their new signing fit and firing for their Champions League last-16 tie with Liverpool.
