A report from the United Kingdom claims Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is one of the main candidates to replace Erik ten Hag at Man United.
The Dutch tactician is walking on increasingly thin ice, with the Red Devils lagging behind their rivals in the Premier League table. They currently sit in a disappointing 13th place following their devastating 0-3 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
According to the Daily Star, the club’s hierarchy is seriously considering sacking Ten Hag, especially if he fails to deliver positive results in the upcoming Europa League contest against Porto and the ensuing league encounter versus Aston Villa.
The source then brings forward Inzaghi as a main candidate to inherit the Manchester United hot seat. The 48-year-old has been serving as Inter’s manager since replacing Antonio Conte in the summer of 2021.
The Piacenza native won six trophies in his first three years at Appiano Gentile, with the most prominent being the Scudetto title last term, which unlocked the club’s second star. He is tied to a contract with the Italian champions until 2026.
The alternative would be former England manager Gareth Southgate who has several admirers and close friends within the club’s hierarchy.
Our Take on Inzaghi Links to Man United
If the Premier League giants decide to wield the axe on Ten Hag’s tenure, they will have to bring in a new manager who’s either unattached (like Southgate) or someone who’s able to free himself from his contract obligations to make himself available straight away, and that is certainly not the case for Inzaghi.
So unless the plan is to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season and try their luck with Inzaghi in the summer, the whole plan doesn’t truly add up.
