Inter Move Ahead of Milan in Race to Sign Marcus Thuram

A long-running transfer saga over Marcus Thuram’s future is nearing its end as Inter moved to the head of the queue in the last hours. As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, the Nerazzurri have leapfrogged arch-rivals Milan in the race to sign the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach star.

Thuram looked to be on the verge of joining Stefano Pioli’s side only a few days ago. Rumors suggested the parties had a verbal agreement in place, naming Milan as the frontrunners to sign the French forward. However, the situation changed in the blink of an eye, with Inter overtaking the Rossoneri in the transfer tug-of-war.

Per Di Marzio, Simone Inzaghi’s men have offered Thuram a lucrative contract package worth €5.5 million a season, spreading over multiple years. The 25-year-old has already given his blessing, deciding against honoring his word to Milan. After receiving a green light from the player, Inter are confident about getting the deal over the line soon.

If everything goes according to plan, Thuram could soon put pen to paper on a multi-year contract at Giuseppe Meazza. His prospective arrival may indicate the end of Romelu Lukaku’s hopes of earning a new loan deal at Inter. The Belgium international spent last season in Serie A following an underwhelming first year at Chelsea.

But despite reportedly turning down a mega-money bid from Saudi Arabia to extend his stay at Inter, he’s likely to end up empty-handed. Lukaku experienced an injury-plagued 2022/23 campaign. Even though he rediscovered his form down the tail-end of last season, his epic miss in the Champions League final seems to be coming back to bite him.

While he seemingly has no future at Inter, his career in Serie A may not be over just yet. If recent speculation proves valid, Milan, of all teams, are ready to throw Lukaku a lifeline in Italy’s top flight. Though it’s only a theory for the moment, Thuram’s deal with the Nerazzurri could facilitate his unfathomable switch to the Rossoneri.
