Inter Mulling Swap with Cagliari to Add Veteran Striker

Inter are working on multiple fronts to strengthen the roster in January and the latest option that emerged to fill out the attack is Leonardo Pavoletti, Corriere della Sera and Gazzetta dello Sport report. The Nerazzurri are currently engaged in a negotiation with Cagliari for Radja Nainggolan and the 32-year-old striker has been discussed as a possible bargaining chip, as they do not want to give away the midfielder for nothing.

Pavoletti has had two solid years with the Sardinians from 2017 to 2019, but he has rarely played in the last two seasons because of two consecutive ACL tears in the same knee. In the current campaign, he has made 11 appearances, starting four times, notching one goal and one assist.

Pavoletti is not the only name on the list as the Beneamata has long coveted Gervinho, who would come in handy given Alexis Sanchez’s repeated injury problems, and is also looking at Andreas Cornelius, Kevin Lasagna and Simone Zaza as their respective teams have asked for Andrea Pinamonti in the past. Inter are open to moving the young forward on loan since he has not played much so far. The most glamorous option would be Chelsea’s Oliver Giroud, but it is considered unlikely given that he is featuring regularly.

Our view

Pavoletti would give Inter a decent and experienced back-up for Romelu Lukaku, something they have been seeking for two years, and Cagliari, if they got Radja Nainggolan in return, probably would not mind partying ways with him given that they have grown accustomed to relying on Giovanni Simeone up front.
