Reigning Scudetto holders Inter have started preparing for life after Hakan Calhanoglu, who could depart for Bayern Munich after Euro 2024. According to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, the new Serie A champions have placed a watchful eye on Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand.
Calhanoglu’s negotiations with the Bundesliga juggernauts behind their back have caused unrest among the Giuseppe Meazza hierarchy. While Inter remain hopeful of fending off the Bavarians’ attempts to sign the Turkey international, they’re preparing for a worst-case scenario. The 30-year-old’s exit has become a distinct possibility.
Therefore, Inter have identified Hjulmand as a potential long-term replacement. No stranger to Serie A, the 24-year-old captained Lecce in the 2022/23 season. His sterling form at Stadio Via del Mare earned him a €20million switch to Lisbon last summer. He went from strength to strength in his first season in the Primeira Liga.
Hjulmand made 42 appearances for Sporting this past campaign, helping them dethrone Benfica. Aware of the Denmark international’s stunning progress, Ruben Amorim’s men have slapped a substantial €40m price tag on his shoulders. That’s still around €20m less than what Inter expect to get from Calhanoglu’s potential move to the Allianz Arena.
But if Hjulmand maintains his superb form at Euro 2024, the price could go up. He scored a screamer to help Denmark hold pre-tournament favorites England to a 1-1 draw. Inter scouts were in the stands watching, and they returned to Italy with rave reviews.
