Inter Off to Lecce to Maintain Serie A Dream Target

Runaway Serie A leaders Inter head to Stadio Via del Mare to take on mid-table Lecce on Sunday, looking to uphold their perfect record in 2024. Simone Inzaghi’s high-flyers are on the verge of lifting their 20th Scudetto after finishing the previous round nine points clear of second-placed Juventus with a game in hand.

Off to Puglia to encounter out-of-form Lecce, Inter seem destined for a tenth victory in ten this calendar year. Nerazzurri eked out a well-deserved 1-0 home win against Atletico Madrid in midweek Champions League action to set themselves up perfectly for this trip.

However, Inzaghi contemplates resting several overused first-team stars, with fatigue catching up with Inter. Marcus Thuram picked up a groin injury against Atletico and will remain on the sidelines this weekend. The Frenchman’s problem warned the Nerazzurri boss of the importance of rotating his squad.

With Inter set to field an experimental lineup at Via del Mare, their flawless competitive record in 2024 may not hold up. Despite winning their last three league matches against Lecce, they can’t take anything for granted, especially considering Roberto D’Aversa’s men have been hard to beat at home this season.

But if Inter can take advantage of Lecce’s downturn, featuring seven defeats in their last nine league outings, they would stay on pace for a 100-point landmark. The only team in Serie A history to reach this milestone was Juventus in 2013/14 under Antonio Conte.

Inter’s 2.64 points-per-match rate makes them realistic candidates to replicate that feat.
