Inter weathered the storm at the Etihad Stadium, holding perennial Premier League champions Manchester City to a spirited 0-0 draw at the start of their new Champions League campaign. Simone Inzaghi’s side had a fair share of chances to get on the scoresheet, but they were ultimately lucky to leave England unscathed.
Inter (3-5-2)
Yann Sommer – 8
There’s no doubt who the man of the match is! The Swiss goalkeeper had an answer for everything Man City threw his way, soaking up the limelight as Inter’s hero at the Etihad.
Yann Bisseck – 7
A phenomenal experience for the young gun, who barely put his foot wrong tonight after being called to fill Benjamin Pavard’s shoes at one of the most intimidating European stadiums.
Francesco Acerbi – 7.5
Despite his age, the veteran fought valiantly against Erling Haaland. After struggling in the first half, he made the leading Premier League goalscorer disappear from the game in the second 45 minutes.
Alessandro Bastoni – 6.5
A player of his stature should know better than to dribble in his own box against Man City’s press. Luckily for Inter, his mistake went unpunished. Spot on, otherwise!
Matteo Darmian – 6.5
His poor decision-making let him down in a crucial one-on-one situation against Ederson. He tried to be clever with a loose backheel pass instead of pulling the trigger. Defensively impeccable!
Nicolo Barella – 7.5
You won’t see a more dynamic display from a midfielder in this opening Champions League round than this. He was everywhere tonight, helping out his defense while pushing his team forward when in possession. Brilliant!
Hakan Calhanoglu – 6.5
He was tireless at the back, providing additional cover to his backline, which inevitably took a toll on his offensive contribution. Inter desperately lacked his vertical balls in attack.
Piotr Zielinski – 7
His darting run down the middle in the first half, which led to Ruben Dias’ booking, was one of the highlights of this fiercely contested game. Apart from one wayward attempt from distance, he was impressive.
Carlos Augusto – 7
Ederson’s fabulous leg save on the stroke of halftime denied the Brazilian his maiden Champions League goal. Regardless, he can be proud of tonight’s performance.
Marcus Thuram – 6
The Frenchman tried to be the difference-maker tonight, but his overwhelming desire to be a point of difference proved counterproductive, leading to numerous sloppy errors.
Mehdi Taremi –
