Inter player ratings vs Roma: Thuram’s Late-Winner Breaks the Deadlock

Here are our Inter player ratings following the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 victory over Roma at the Stadio San Siro in match-week 10 of the 2023/24 Serie A season.

Whilst the Giallorossi maintained compact and did well to fend off a predominant Inzaghi side, whom were extremely innovative and fluid when in-possession, it was 26 year-old Marcus Thuram who served as the difference maker as he tucked the ball past Portuguese shot-stopper Rui Patricio with only ten minutes remaining of play in courtesy of a superb low-driven cross from Federico Dimarco.

The Frenchman’s fourth goal of the season enabled Inter to leap past Juventus to the top of the league with a total of 25 points, separating themselves from the Bianconeri by a gap of two points.

Inter: (3-5-2)

Yann Sommer-7

Despite not being tested much due to Inter’s incredible discipline in defence, the Swiss veteran managed to keep the Benemata in the game with an extraordinary lunging stop following Bryan Cristante’s headed attempt on goal, which would have definitely altered the outcome of the significant fixture had the ball have gone past Sommer.

Benjamin Pavard-7

The Frenchman was brilliant yet again on the right-hand side of the back-three, winning vital challenges and making impeccable runs up the pitch when Inter were on the attack. Although the 27-year-old’s finishing this evening was way off the mark, Pavard played a vital role in containing the Giallorossi’s front-line.

Francesco Acerbi-7.5

The former Lazio defender portrayed a master-class performance this evening as he completely shut-out former teammate Romelu Lukaku throughout the majority of the fixture. The 35-year-old anticipated many of Roma’s attacks with his aerial dominance and magnificent read of the game. Acerbi served as a vital asset when building out of the back as he distributed fine passes out-wide.

Alessandro Bastoni-7

The Italian defender performed very well as he remained disciplined defensively and made superb passes in order to switch the focal point of the attack. The 24-year-old made impressive runs in-behind in order to disturb the Giallorossi’s defensive shape

Denzel Dumfries-8

The Dutchman may have had his best performance this evening at the San Siro since joining Inter as he dominated on the right-hand side with his immense strength and impressive dribbling when moving forward. The wing-back caused havoc for Polish youngster Nicola Zalewski when on the ball as he kept manoeuvring past him with great ease and centred some fine crosses from out-wide. Dumfries was also brilliant in tracking back in defence in order to close space swiftly.

 Nicolò Barella-7.5

The Italian international was flawless within the three-in-midfield, injecting creativity and energy in the Nerazzurri’s attacking play with his explosive dribbling and his quick short-passes. Barella’s work-rate defensively was exquisite as he kept recuperating the ball back for Inter and dispersed the play with impeccable long-balls across the pitch.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu-6.5

Although the Turkish international’s passing was quite crisp as he brought stability for Inter when in-possession, the holding midfielder was quite ruthless defensively, lunging into unnecessary challenges as he almost got sent off after going studs up on Leonardo Paredes shortly after receiving a yellow card.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan-7

The Armenian international was sharp on the ball as he glided across the pitch with ease and was dangerous with his swift one-two combinations as he linked up with the two forwards up-top.

Federico Dimarco-7.5

The Italian wing-back played with a great deal of confidence whilst on the ball, continuously moving forward and taking on defenders in one-vs-one scenarios. The 25-year-old proved to be pivotal as he brought down Kristjan Asllani’s sublime first touch and picked out Marcus Thuram for the game-winner with an exceptional low-driven cross.

Lautaro Martinez-6.5

The Argentine was not at his best this evening as he was quite silent throughout the fixture and failed to be clinical when the opportunity arised. However, the skipper provided great link-up play with his strength for the midfielders and provided security for Inzaghi’s side with his trickery dribbling skills.

Marcus Thuram-8.5

The former Monchengladbach striker was a menacing threat throughout the entire evening with his blistering pace and fine dribbling with the ball at his feet. Despite Thuram making impressive runs in-behind, the French international lacked the finishing touch in numerous occasions. However, the 26-year-old talisman capitalized as he guided the ball past the Roma shot-stopper with a brilliant one-time shot from close-range in courtesy of Dimarco in order to seal all three points.

Substitutes:

Matteo Darmian-6

The Italian defender fit quite seamlessly after being deployed at the start of the second half due to coach Simone Inzaghi unwilling to risk Pavard obtaining a second yellow card. Darmian made fine challenges and his build-up play was quite impressive.

Kristjan Asllani-6.5

The promising Albanian midfielder made an immediate mark to the fixture as launched a world-class through-ball to find Dimarco in-behind, which led to the game winning goal in order to keep Inter’s title hopes alive. The former Empoli midfielder was strong defensively and made a sequence of fine passes whilst on the pitch.
