Lautaro Martinez has penned a new long-term contract at Inter, yet the Serie A champions are no longer interested in Genoa’s Albert Gudmundsson. During a comprehensive interview with Sky Sport Italia, Beppe Marotta confirmed the 2024 Copa America winner ‘has already signed’ a new deal but played down the club’s pursuit of the Icelandic forward.
“It’s all done. He [Lautaro] already signed the paperwork, but we want to make it official when he has returned from his vacation,” the Inter president said, as quoted by TMW.
Martinez soaked up the limelight as Serie A’s most prolific goalscorer in 2023/24, inspiring Inter to a landmark 20th Scudetto on the back of his most impressive individual campaign. The 26-year-old translated his formidable form to the international stage, winning the top-scorer award at the 2024 Copa America as Argentina defended the title in the US.
He has yet to return to Giuseppe Meazza after Inter granted him extended holidays following a busy season. Martinez’s contract renewal is a massive piece of business for the Nerazzurri. But they’ve lost interest in pairing their captain with Genoa star Gudmundsson.
“He [Gudmundsson] is not an option. At this moment, we have an attack full of quality and goals. At this moment, he is not what we need,” Marotta categorically denied Inter’s ambition to sign the 27-year-old.
Marotta’s statement arrives days after Juventus allegedly joined Inter in hot pursuit of the versatile forward. With the Nerazzurri backing off, Gudmundsson’s future could be in Turin.
