Inter President Beppe Marotta has shut down speculation linking the Serie A champions with Genoa talisman Albert Gudmundsson. Despite recent talks suggesting they’re still ‘hot on the Iceland international’s heels,’ Marotta ruled him out as a Nerazzurri target during an interview with Sport Mediaset.
Asked whether Inter are targeting Marcos Alonso and Gudmundsson, Marotta replied: “I think I’m going to rule them out because the squad we have is already strong in itself,” via Gianluca Di Marzio. Whether this was Marotta’s attempt to get into Genoa’s minds or a sincere intention, the track leading to the 27-year-old has suddenly gone cold.
With Inter seemingly unable to convince Marko Arnautovic to depart Giuseppe Meazza, Mehdi Taremi arriving on a free transfer, and Joaquin Correa coming back from a woeful loan spell at Marseille, there’s no room for another forward.
In the meantime, Inter wingback Tajon Buchanan picked up a nasty injury at the 2024 Copa America as Canada reached the quarter-finals in their maiden appearances. Marotta confirmed the former Club Brugge star could be on the sidelines for around four months.
“The information we have is that surgery went very well,” the Inter chief stated. “We hope to have him back in 4 months. Beyond that, we will then carefully evaluate what could be a more complete squad, in light of the numerous competitions, regardless of who should play.“
Buchanan joined Inter last January. However, was a marginal figure in the second half of the 2023/24 season. Suffering a long-term injury was the last thing the Canadian needed.
