Inter Reach Roadblock in Effort to Sign Roma’s Smalling

Inter target Chris Smalling is close to renewing his Roma stay following talks of the former Manchester United man’s departure. Smalling is a valued member of Jose Mourinho’s squad, having been utilized incessantly across all competitions by the Special One this campaign.

As per Il Tempo (via FCInterNews), Smalling’s agent James Featherstone is in the Giallorossi’s Trigoria complex to talk terms of his client’s contract with sporting director Tiago Pinto. Roma are keen to hold onto the center-back, whose deal expires at the end of the season – in June 2023 – offering him a two-year extension deal in order to avoid losing him for free.

Before Milan took on Roma in last week’s league draw at San Siro, Pinto even commented that ‘the desire to continue is both on the club’s part and on the player’s side.’

The 33-year-old defender is currently in a situation where he could speak to interested suitors, such as Juventus and  Inter, but no developments have yet taken place. He could move for free at the end of the campaign, but prefers to gel out and continue his Giallorossi stay for the near future.
