Inter Remain Keen on Denzel Dumfries Despite Nahitan Nandez’s Pursuit

Inter have not dropped interest in PSV Eindhoven right-back Denzel Dumfries despite the ongoing pursuit of Cagliari’s Hahitan Nandez. According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreInter), the Nerazzurri remain firmly in the race for the Netherlands international.

Signing a new right-back to replace Achraf Hakimi is one of Inter’s priorities this summer. The reigning Serie A champions are exploring several profiles, including Cagliari’s Nandez and Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.

Talks over the Uruguayan’s move to the Giuseppe Meazza are progressing well, as the Nerazzurri look to complete the deal soon. Meanwhile, the Spaniard has already told Arsenal that he wants to switch to Italy, particularly to Inter.

However, Beppe Marotta’s ideal candidate to replace Hakimi remains Dumfries, who is currently training separately from the rest of the PSV squad. The 25-year-old is keen to take the next step in his career and secure a high-profile move in the coming weeks.

Dumfries, whose rise to prominence at Euro 2020 drew attention from a host of European clubs, has two years remaining on his contract at the Phillips Stadium. Therefore, PSV are open to letting the highly-rated right-back depart Eindhoven in the summer but only if their demands are met.

In the meantime, Inter’s financial situation means they are only able to sign Dumfries on a loan deal with an option/obligation to buy. Unfortunately, that’s not the structure PSV are willing to accept, which gives Everton an upper hand in a prospective tug-of-war. The Toffees are also in the running for Dumfries’ signature, and they seem to be leading the chase at this point.

The Dutchman enjoyed a stellar 2020/21 season at PSV, racking up four goals and nine assists in all competitions from a right-back. His bursting runs down the right flank and scoring instincts would make him a perfect substitute for Hakimi. However, Inter may have to reconcile with signing Nandez or Bellerin instead.
