After a season-long stint at Marseille, Alexis Sanchez is back at Inter to complete Simone Inzaghi’s aggressive recruitment campaign. The Chilean striker has followed in the footsteps of another veteran, Marko Arnautovic, who swapped Bologna for Giuseppe Meazza after the high-profile departures of Romelu Lukaku and Edin Dzeko.
Sanchez’s return to Inter has come out of the blue. Inzaghi’s ambition to revamp his attacking options was no secret, especially after Lukaku and Dzeko left the Meazza headquarters. However, the 34-year-old Chilean was never part of the conversations, until, all of a sudden, he signed a short-term contract. Despite his near-anonymous Serie A exit, the ex-Manchester United flop is enthusiastic about returning to Italy.
“Everyone knows that Inter are a great team; they were Champions League finalists last season. I’ve always said it: in my career, I want to win and play for strong sides, which is what Inter are. I’ve been here before and want to win here again.” he told the club’s official website upon return.
Inter won their opening Serie A fixture against Monza 2-0 as Arnautovic provided an assist on his debut. Sanchez will be keen to replicate the Austrian’s impact. He should be part of Inzaghi’s squad for the upcoming clash against newly-promoted Cagliari on Monday.
During his previous spell at Inter, Sanchez scored several significant goals, including a Coppa Italia winner against Juventus in 2022. He’ll take Joaquin Correa’s place. The Argentine has joined Marseille on loan.
