Inter Set Sights on Atalanta Defender After Azpilicueta Fiasco

After Cesar Azpilicueta handed Inter a significant transfer blow by joining Atletico Madrid, the Italians have had to adjust their recruitment plan. As per Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, wantaway Atalanta defender Merih Demiral has parachuted to the Nerazzurri’s shopping list.

Demiral has three more years left to run on his contract at Atalanta. But his long-term future in Bergamo is all but safe. The 25-year-old fell out of favor with manager Gian Piero Gasperini in the second half of last season. Despite accruing 25 Serie A appearances in 2022/23, he only made three league starts between February and May.

Atalanta won’t oppose Demiral’s departure. But some persuasiveness from the Inter part may be required. That’s, of course, if the Nerazzurri decide to concretize their interest in the former Juventus misfit. For the moment, the Turkey international is only a thought, among many others, as Beppe Marotta works to replace Milan Skriniar.

The Slovakia international is no longer a member of the Inter squad. It’s official from today as his contract ran out. Heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain since last summer, the 28-year-old is now free to pursue his dream and finally complete his long-awaited switch to Ligue 1.

Even though PSG have had second thoughts about hiring Skriniar due to his nasty back problem, it’s not Inter’s problem anymore. Their only concern is to find a decent replacement for the former Sampdoria center-half. Demiral is an option but not the only one.
