Simone Inzaghi had a three-hour meeting with the Inter brass yesterday to finalize his extension. The parties have fully come to terms, and the club will make it official in short order, perhaps as soon as today. The coach will have a year added to his contract and get a pay raise, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
The new deal of the gaffer will run through 2024. As per Calciomercato, his wages will increase from €3M to €4.5M. The boss and the powerbrokers also discussed about the prospective transfer market deals. Romelu Lukaku is close to joining, although the Nerazzurri need to improve their offer on the loan fee. They tendered €5M, while Chelsea asked for €10M. It should not be a major obstacle, though.
Inzaghi won two trophies in his first season at the helm of Inter, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa, besting Juventus on both occasions. They were eliminated by Liverpool in the Round of 16 of the Champions League, making it past the group stage for the first time in years. He collected 34 wins, 11 draws and 7 losses in 52 matches at the helm. La Beneamata lured him away from Lazio last summer once Antonio Conte decided to leave.
Our Take on Inter Extending Inzaghi
Top clubs rarely start a season with a lame-duck coach, meaning that he is on the last year of his contract, if not because they are unsatisfied and plan to part ways with him at the end of it. That is not the case for the Nerazzurri. Even though they arguably let a Scudetto slip through their fingers, the manager has been fine in his first year in an elite team. Moreover, the management probably appreciates the fact that he is not overly demanding, unlike his predecessor.
