Inter Set to Be Very Active on the Free Agent Market

As has been the case in the past, Inter are attentively keeping tabs on a few players whose contracts expire at the end of the season to replenish their roster by spending little. The defense will be their main focus considering Milan Skriniar’s departure and Stefan De Vrij’s uncertain future, La Gazzetta dello Sport relays.

If the Dutchman turned down the extension, they’d be ready to pounce on Chris Smalling, who has the final say on the option to re-up with Roma. They had some contacts with his agents. They are willing to match what he currently earns, €3.5M per year plus add-ons. Instead, the Giallorossi tried to renegotiate and lower his wages.

Inter are after Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu, although Atletico Madrid are in the lead. The Colchoneros haven’t sealed the deal just yet, and the Nerazzurri hope Hakan Calhanoglu could lure his compatriot to Milan.

While Frank Kessié would be an ideal but pricey piece to bolster the midfield, especially if they sold Marcelo Brozovic, Roberto Pereyra would be much more affordable. He’s set to leave Udinese on a free if a top team wants him. He’d provide depth in multiple roles since he has been playing as a right wing-back this season.

Our Take on Inter

There are good opportunities out there, and Giuseppe Marotta is savvy and timely in playing this game. Smalling would be an upgrade over De Vrij, even though he’s older. Pereyra is well deserving of returning to a big club as he has been solid in Friuli. They are thin in the midfield and will likely lose Roberto Gagliardini.
