Inter Set to Miss Out on Luiz Felipe Signing

Real Betis have reportedly leapfrogged Inter in the race to sign outgoing Lazio defender Luiz Felipe on a free transfer in the summer. As per Mundo Deportivo (via SempreInter), the Spaniards are currently in pole position to sign the 24-year-old at the end of the season.

Felipe has entered the final six months of his contract at the Stadio Olimpico. Despite Lazio’s relentless attempts to lure the centre-back to sign an extension, the player looks keen to secure a new challenge elsewhere.

The Brazilian star’s contractual situation in the nation’s capital has drawn several enquiries from top European clubs, including Inter. New Nerazzurri boss Simone Inzaghi knows in-depth about Felipe’s qualities as the duo worked together for a few years at Lazio.

Given Stefan de Vrij’s uncertain future at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and growing foreign interest in Milan Skriniar, Inzaghi has thought about landing his former protege. However, the Italian manager could end up empty-handed following Betis’ interference in the race.

Los Verdiblancos are said to be in the driving seat to acquire Felipe’s services on a Bosman deal come July. Under Manuel Pellegrini’s stewardship, Betis have developed into genuine top-four contenders in La Liga.

They are currently third in the standings, one point above fifth-placed Atletico Madrid. Though there is still a long way to go, the club’s appetites have naturally gone up. Pellegrini’s men have conceded 23 goals this season, more than any other La Liga side from the top eight.

Therefore, it comes as no surprsie that Betis are looking to strengthen their backline. But despite their superb domestic season, the Andalusians are still operating on a tight budget, hence their decision to focus on completing low-cost deals.
