Inter Star Believes Switzerland vs Italy Could Go to Penalties

Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer admits to the possibility of Switzerland’s mouth-watering Euro 2024 last-16 tie against Italy going to penalties. Speaking to the press in the build-up to Saturday’s encounter at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Sommer looked back at the crucial penalty save to thwart Jorginho in the 2022 World Cup qualifying.

I don’t want to face a penalty tomorrow night. If there’s a penalty, I will do my best to try and keep it out. I will prepare the best I can, but I am not here to think about those penalties, the Inter veteran said, as quoted by FromTheSpot.

We know that there could be a match that goes to a penalty shootout, there is no doubt about that. Before the game, if I’m perfectly honest, I don’t necessarily study all of the individual possible penalty takers because there would be too much information to try and take on board before the match itself.

Sommer starred for Inter in 2023/24, helping the club win their 20th Serie A title in his first season in Italy. The 35-year-old has translated his superb club form to the international stage, enjoying an impressive Euro 2024 group-stage campaign.

The Inter man conceded three goals as Switzerland finished runners-up to host nation Germany in a highly competitive Group A. Murat Yakin’s side couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the tournament. They dispatched Hungary 3-1 in the opening round before slumping to back-to-back 1-1 draws against Germany and Scotland.
