Not long ago, Martinez was on the pace to challenge Ciro Immobile’s outright record for most goals scored in a single Serie A campaign. But after drawing a blank in back-to-back league appearances before the international break, it’s become a ‘mission improbable.’
With nine games left, the 26-year-old needs 13 goals to achieve that feat, meaning he’ll have to average 1.44 goals per match. Empoli’s visit to Giuseppe Meazza on Monday could be a perfect opportunity for the Inter talisman to add to his tally.
If Martinez can bag a double, as he did when Inter faced Empoli at home in May 2022, he’ll stand a fighting chance. However, shattering Immobile’s incredible league record will probably be insufficient to win the ex-Racing frontman the coveted European Golden Boot.
Though Immobile claimed the prize during his record-breaking campaign, he didn’t have to compete with Harry Kane that year. This time, the Bayern Munich striker seems destined for the award. With 31 Bundesliga goals, he’s the uncontested leader in European football.
Kane’s tally beats Martinez’s 23-goal haul by a decent margin. On that basis, even if the Inter goal-getter does the unthinkable and equals Immobile’s record, he’ll still probably watch the former Tottenham Hotspur skipper claim the accolade.
