Runaway Serie A leaders Inter have suffered an injury blow during the international break as Yann Sommer picked up an ankle problem. The veteran goalkeeper was forced off late in the first half as Switzerland and Denmark shared the spoils in a tepid 0-0 friendly draw.
Sommer’s start to life at Inter has been an utter success. Andre Onana’s successor has gone from strength to strength during his early Serie A days, racking up 18 clean sheets in the league. The 35-year-old was Switzerland’s first choice even before landing at Giuseppe Meazza.
His superb form at Inter has only solidified his place between the sticks as Murat Yakin started him in this evening’s clash against Denmark. However, Yvon Mvogo had to take Sommer’s place in the 37th minute after the ex-Bayern Munich shot-stopper twisted his ankle.
Sommer will leave the Swiss camp and return to Inter to undergo further checks, with Simone Inzaghi at risk of losing another first-team star ahead of the upcoming match against Empoli. Marko Arnautovic, Juan Cuadrado, and Stefan de Vrij are already out.
If Sommer’s injury prevents him from making the starting XI against Gli Azzurri after the international break, Inter will turn to Sampdoria loanee Emil Audero to fill the vacancy. Inzaghi’s side headed into the two-week hiatus from club football in a desperate mood.
As if bowing out of the Champions League last-16 at the hands of Atletico Madrid wasn’t disappointing enough, Inter conceded late in a frustrating 1-1 draw against defending Serie A champions Napoli last time out.
