Inter Star Vanishes in January amid Transfer Chatter

Denzel Dumfries has played very little since the World Cup, raising suspicion that he’s being held out for transfer market reasons. Simone Inzaghi recently stated that he wasn’t fully fit. He has logged less than 90 minutes in five January fixtures, starting only in Coppa Italia versus Parma.

According to Calciomercato, his agent Rafaele Pimenta is spending time in England. He has touched base with a few teams, such as Newcastle, Manchester United, and Chelsea. However, they considered his price tag excessive. The Blues, which have often been rumored to be his most likely destination, are trying to sign Malo Gusto from Olympique Lyonnais in the same role.

Inter want €40/50M to part ways with Dumfries, but nobody has come close to their valuation. He has been tapped as the player to profit on to mend their finances. The sale should happen before the end of June.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Tuttomercatoweb), La Beneamata is open to an immediate departure. It’s highly unlikely it will occur before deadline day, though. Despite his agent’s activity, there hasn’t even been an inquiry between clubs at this stage.

Our Take on Dumfries

The Nerazzurri are lucky to have a solid backup like Matteo Darmian, which allows them to potentially sign a prospect or a foreigner if, or probably when, they part ways with the Dutchman. There doesn’t appear to be much going on yet. The lineup against Cremonese, when they won’t have Milan Skriniar, and the veteran will likely move to the backline, will be telling about whether there’s something in the works.
