Inter Suffer Huge Injury Blow Ahead of Lecce Clash

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi has received a fitness blow ahead of his side’s home league clash against Lecce on Saturday evening. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Nerazzurri captain Lautaro Martinez could skip today’s match due to a minor injury.

Martinez is reportedly suffering muscle fatigue. He was in the starting line-up on the opening Serie A weekend as Inter and Genoa shared the spoils in a nail-biting 2-2 draw at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. Only after has the 2024 Copa America winner reported fatigue in his adductor muscles.

As such, there’s a genuine possibility for Inter to take on Lecce without last season’s Capocannoniere prizewinner. In case of Martinez’s absence, Inzaghi will likely turn to Mehdi Taremi. The marquee summer arrival impressed in his cameo debut against Genoa last weekend.

Taremi has joined Inter on a free transfer after running down his contract at Porto. He was superb in the early pre-season before picking up an injury, which kept him on the sidelines for a fortnight. However, he recovered in time to make the bench against Genoa.

Now, he could make his first Serie A start in the Inter jersey. Marcus Thuram has a guaranteed spot in the starting XI, especially after bagging a brace against Alberto Gilardino’s team last weekend. Marko Arnautovic is another alternative, but Taremi is the favorite to partner with the French star.

On a positive note for Inter, Piotr Zielinski is back from injury and could make his league debut today.
