Inter manager Simone Inzaghi has compared Lautaro Martinez’s sterling form in Serie A with Ciro Immobile’s during his time at Lazio. The free-firing Argentine forward embraced the spotlight as Nerazzurri thrashed Lecce 4-0 to re-establish an 11-point cushion at the table’s summit.
Martinez scored on either side of halftime to take his seasonal tally in Serie A to 22 goals. That’s his most prolific campaign since arriving from Racing Club in 2018, and there’s enough time to push for the outright record for most goals in one Serie A season co-owned by Immobile and Gonzalo Higuain.
Interestingly, Immobile’s history-making campaign was under Inzaghi in 2019/20 when he matched Higuain’s 36-goal tally. The Inter boss believes Martinez could hit that threshold this term, insisting it only depends on the 26-year-old, who must show consistency down the final stretch.
“Only time will tell, he just needs to continue like this,” Inzaghi replied when asked whether his talisman could catch up with Immobile and Higuain. “Lautaro is having a remarkable journey, it reminds me of the growth I saw in Ciro Immobile with me at Lazio,” he told DAZN, as quoted by Gianluca Di Marzio.
Martinez stepped up when Inter needed him the most. He put on a remarkable performance to carry runaway Serie A leaders to an emphatic victory without having Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu to watch his back. Having netted seven goals more than second-placed Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, he seems destined to win the Capocannoniere Award this term.
