Inter Target Atletico Madrid Outcast De Paul

Inter could attempt to bring Atletico Madrid ace Rodrigo De Paul back to Serie A in the upcoming transfer window. According to Spanish news outlet Marca, the defending Italian champions are giving serious thought to the prospect of launching a summer bid for the Argentina international.

De Paul left Udinese to link up with Atletico last summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract. However, after an impressive five years at the Dacia Arena, the 27-year-old has faltered in La Liga.

The skilful playmaker has failed to land a regular starting berth under Diego Simeone, making 22 La Liga starts this season. Indeed, De Paul has been deemed surplus to requirements and could be on his way out of Wanda Metropolitano.

Following another trophyless campaign, Simeone considers overhauling his squad in the summer. Many underperforming stars, including De Paul, could fall victim to Atletico’s bid to revamp their options ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Considering he has fond memories of his time in Serie A, the possibility of returning to Italy could go down kindly with the former Valencia flop. Inter will undergo several midfield changes in the summer, and De Paul could be one of the potential reinforcements.

Matias Vecino and Arturo Vidal will exit Giuseppe Meazza after failing to convince Inter to offer them new deals. Even though the duo has played a bit-part role in Simone Inzaghi’s set-up, their imminent departures will leave the Nerazzurri boss short of options in the midfield.

De Paul, who can cover a multitude of roles across the midfield line, could fill the vacancy. It remains uncertain how much Atletico demand to let him go. However, based on his current status in Madrid, it should not be much.

Inter may not be able to afford to splash out heavy figures in the summer as the well-documented financial turmoil continues to cause the Meazza chiefs a sizeable headache.
