Simone Inzaghi waxed lyrical about his unstoppable Inter side during the post-Juventus conference following a 1-0 Derby d’Italia triumph. Though Nerazzurri needed Federico Gatti’s own goal to get another Serie A win over the line, they well deserved only their second win in seven matches against Massimiliano Allegri’s team.
Inter boasted a 51% ball possession and generated an eye-catching 1.9 xG as they bulldozed their way to a sixth consecutive league victory at Giuseppe Meazza. With a game in hand, they now hold a four-point lead on second-placed Juventus and seem destined to succeed Napoli at the podium come May.
However, Inzaghi maintains Inter can’t afford to rest on their laurels if they’re to put a second star on their jersey. Game-wise, he refused to be humble, insisting his charges deserved to halt a three-match winless run against Juventus in Serie A.
“We earned a victory, an important and fully deserved win that we wanted with the whole squad,” the Inter boss told DAZN. “The way we prepared, played, and controlled the game, we are very happy. The fans pushed us on from the warm-up to the final whistle and beyond.
“However, it is only one step in a long journey. Juve and Milan will not give up.”
It’s been a perfect start to 2024 for Inter. Not only have they won all four league assignments. But they lifted a third successive Supercoppa Italiana trophy, putting Lazio and Napoli to the sword in a Saudi Arabia-held mini-tournament.
