Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries experienced an injury scare during Inter’s 3-2 win over Atalanta – just eight days before the start of the World Cup – as he was replaced in the 72nd minute by Raoul Bellanova. The youngster was forced to sit out for the remainder of the game, in tense mood, with an ice-pack on his knee. However, he has now cleared doubts of his return to playing ways.
The defender spoke to Dutch outlet NOS and revealed what he went through, assuring fans that he will be available to appear in Louis Van Gaal’s starting eleven.
“I thought for a moment, shit, what’s going on? I took a nudge and then my knee stiffened. It was the muscle above my knee, and not the joint itself. I couldn’t run anymore, so I had to get out.”
The 26-year-old then assured Dutch fans of his presence in the showdown event.
“I’m not worried in the least, of course I’ll come to the World Cup. I want to be a starter already in the first match against Senegal , I feel fit. Here in the national team, several tests have been carried out and all have been positive. Later I will go to the hospital for a exam so as to eliminate any uncertainty, but I don’t expect anything strange.”
The Netherlands open their account against AFCON champions Senegal on 21 November, before tackling Ecuador four days later. Their last group stage match will be against hosts Qatar on 29 November.
