Inzaghi Brothers Share Spoils as Benevento Hold Lazio

The Derby of the Inzaghi Brothers ended in a stalemate as Benevento and Lazio tied 1-1 in the Serie A Round 12 opener at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito. Simone Inzaghi’s visitors came closer to make a full score as a Ciro Immobile strike drew first blood for the Biancocelesti, but Pasquale Schiattarella equalized for Filippo’s boys before being eventually sent off.

Lazio needed the three points to redeem themselves from their unexpected setback with Verona from Saturday while Benevento were looking to get back on track after suffering a 0-1 loss to Sassuolo.

The Giallorossi had an aggressive start and it took a double save from Pepe Reina – who denied Gianluca Lapadula and Kamil Glik in succession – to keep the score unchanged after six minutes.

Lazio’s reaction saw Gonzalo Escalante – who was replacing injured Lucas Leiva in the middle of the park – serving a fine chance to Joaquin Correa but the Argentine failed to catch his suggestion. On 22 minutes, Luis Alberto hit the crossbar – his effort sounding a prelude to Lazio’s opener, which would come four minutes later.

It was Ciro Immobile to put the Biancocelesti ahead, making the best out of a Sergej Milinkovic Savic’s cross from the right side by firing the ball into Lorenzo Montipò’s goal. It was goal number 7 this season for the incumbent Serie A capocannoniere.

Lazio piled on their pressure and came close to make it two with Immobile again and then with Luis Alberto, who was denied by Kamil Glik. But right before half-time, Benevento had their equalizer with a left-foot effort from Pasquale Schiattarella from a corner kick.

There were additional chances for both sides in the second half but not enough to move the score again, despite the multiple changes made by both Inzaghi Brothers. The tension was high until late in the game, with Reina denying Giuseppe Di Serio and then Carmine Improta into stoppage time before goal-scorer Schiattarella would be sent off for a vicious tackle on Correa.

It ended with one point each and a handshake between the two brothers, though the shared spoils will be of little help to both Benevento and Lazio.
