Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has praised his side’s performance after holding Manchester City to a 0-0 draw in their opening Champions League clash. Despite failing to enact revenge for a 1-0 defeat in the 2023 final, the Nerazzurri left British shores with dignity.
Man City dominated the game for large spells. However, Inter had two glorious opportunities to break down Pep Guardiola’s home fortress. Unfortunately, the chances went begging as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Matteo Darmian couldn’t hold their horses in front of Ederson’s goal.
While the Armenian midfielder skied his half-volley well over the crossbar, the versatile defender tried to channel his inner Nicolo Barella. Instead of pulling the trigger in a one-on-one situation with Ederson, the Inter veteran relinquished possession with a mindless backheel pass.
Inter were eventually lucky to avoid defeat. Yann Sommer’s outstanding saves toward the end of the match salvaged a precious point for the reigning Scudetto holders. But Inzaghi couldn’t forget the two sitters his side failed to convert.
“It happened in Serie A too, in the final third we need to show skill and technique, which we do have in the squad. This is the first time we haven’t scored this season and it is something we need to work on,” the Inter boss said, as reported by FCInterNews.
“Against these sides like Manchester City and Real Madrid, you always seem like you might be able to score a goal, but then they manage to rescue it.
“Taremi did well to pass it to Carlos Augusto and Ederson made a good save. As for Darmian, he said that he heard Barella call for the pass, their defender did well to intercept, otherwise it would’ve been clear on goal.”
