The Italian Women’s Cup First Match Weekend as It Happened

The Coppa Italia Femminile (Italian Women’s Cup) is back and we already have six games from this weekend to report. At The Cult of Calcio, we cover all faucets of football and the women’s games are not left out as well.

On Saturday, September 26, in an anticipation to the first day of the Italian Cup TIM VISION, Hellas Verona got off to a winning start in a 2-0 win over Cittadella. The Scaligere players took all three points thanks to goals from Giogia Motta and Asia Bragonzi in the last half hour of play, claiming a Veneto regional derby and placing first in Group A.

Elsewhere, Pomigliano got a 1-1 draw against Pink Bari. The first appointment in Group E which also includes Juventus – ended with one goal and one point each for the Campania and Apulia sides. At the Ugo Gobbato Stadium, the hosts went ahead with Giusy Moraca in the 58th minute but Lucia Ceci leveled matters just minutes away from the end of the match.

On Sunday, September 27, six more games took place. In the first match played on Sunday morning at Pontedera, Giuseppe Marino’s Napoli took all three points thanks to a lone goal from Zoubida El Bastali in the 87th minute. The Neapolitans thus took the lead in Group G, which also includes Sassuolo – who didn’t play this week, together with all the top-seeded teams.

The second match of the day between Brescia and Lazio also saw the visitors claiming the win. The Lombard players took the lead in the 16th minute with Cristina Merli but Ashraf Seleman’s Biancocelesti  overturned the score with Noemi Visentin, Adriana Martin from the spot, and Sarah Mattei. Three goals and three points that gave them the lead in Group B, which also includes Inter.

At 3.00 PM, a spectacular 3-4 between Riozzese Como and San Marino kicked off Group C, which also features Fiorentina. The Lariane started off on the right foot and after 45 minutes they were 3-0 ahead of the guests thanks to Alessia Rognoni’s brace and Zhanna Ferrario’s goal. In the second half, however, Alain Conte’s formation reacted and not only put the result on par with Melissa Nozzi, an own goal from Giulia Rizzon and Millie Chandarana, but also found the winning goal with Raffaella Barbieri during stoppage time.

Cesena and Tavagnacco both started the Italian Cup with a defeat. The Romagna players lost their match against Orobica 1-0 (Beatrice Airola scored the winner for the Bergamo side), while the Friulian fell to Roma CF (Roma Calcio Femminile) 2-0 due to Julia Glaser and Aurora Miglio goals.

The Capitoline now lead Group H, which includes Betty Bavagnoli’s Roma (Roma Women). Orobica are at the top of Group F, whose third club is Milan.

Chievo Verona also suffered a home loss to Ravenna. The guests broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with Girogia Filippi, but Silvia Carraro responded in the 55th minute. Twelve minutes before the end, Giada Burbassi claimed all three points for the Romagna team. The victory won them the first place in Group D, where Empoli also play.
