Italy Boss Mancini Sets His Sights on the 2026 World Cup

Roberto Mancini admitted that advancing to the final four of the Nations League doesn’t make up for missing out on the 2022 World Cup, but he will try to lead the Azzurri to the following edition. The coach spoke to the press during the Social Football Summit (via Sky).

“Unfortunately, we will suffer until December because that’s a wound that doesn’t heal. It was totally unfair, but you have to deal with losses. We didn’t deserve it, but that’s what happened. It wasn’t easy to bounce back in another competition, and the players gave their whole. England has an incredible squad and might win in Qatar, while Hungary is very physical.”

The coach extended an olive branch towards players who have seemingly fallen out of favor for off-the-pitch matters.

“We need to trust the youngsters more and restart fromt hem. It’s true that I wasn’t a role model in my playing days, so I’m understanding. Our doors are always open, even to those who didn’t have correct behaviors: they just need to apologize to their teammates and they can come back.”

Mancini detailed why he didn’t quit after the loss against North Macedonia.

“Everybody around me had a very positive attitude. Winning with the national deal is the nicest thing there could be. Giving the Italian people satisfactions is incredible. But we have to wait for four years to do it. We will aim to win the 2026 World Cup in the United States.”
