Italy Center-Back at Risk of Missing Out on Euro 2024

Problems continue to mount for Italy coach Luciano Spalletti, with Gli Azzurri suffering another setback ahead of the 2024 European Championship. According to Sky Italia, Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini is at risk of missing out on the upcoming tournament through injury.
Atalanta spurned a chance to leapfrog Juventus into third, losing 3-2 to Fiorentina at home in the closing fixture of the 2023/24 Serie A season. Scalvini, who picked up a knee injury during the game, was supposed to help Italy defend the crown in Germany.
However, that’s now in doubt. After early scans, the first indications are ominous. The highly-rated center-back could stay on the sidelines throughout the summer. With Italy already losing Francesco Acerbi to injury, Scalvini’s potential absence would be a significant blow.
The 20-year-old got on the scoresheet in the first half. But Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini had to take him off late in the game, casting doubt on his Euro 2024 prospects.
Scalvini should’ve joined the Italy camp by June 3rd. Unfortunately, he’ll now have to undergo further checks to determine whether he’ll be fit for the most prestigious European international tournament.
It’s another potential problem for Italy. In addition to Acerbi’s injury, Spalletti granted Giovanni Di Lorenzo permission to leave the squad to attend to family matters on Saturday.
An already depleted Italy roster can ill-afford to lose another significant member – not with the Euros this close. But there’s still a chance for Scalvini to overcome this issue before the mid-June kick-off.
