Italy Icon and World Cup Winner to Become New Everton Manager?

Legendary Italian centre-back Fabio Cannavaro is high up Everton’s shortlist to replace the recently-sacked Rafael Benitez. The Ballon d’Or winner was interviewed by the Toffees management in a bid to take the place of current caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson at Goodison Park.

Cannavaro joins Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard as the favorites to grab the Premier League managerial job.

Everton wanted to lure in former coach Roberto Martinez but the Belgian FA is reluctant to see him leave before this year’s showdown World Cup event.

The vacant manager role frees up after club owner Farhad Moshiri and the management took the decision of relieving the former Liverpool, Inter and Napoli manager, after a poor run of form that has seen the Merseyside outfit lose nine of their previous 13 games, dropping close to the relegation zone.

World Cup winner Cannavaro’s name appears on Everton’s shortlist, only months after his last job – at Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande, where he spent four years.

If ‘Il Muro di Berlino’ is appointed at the Toffees, it will be his first big-club stint, with most of his experience arriving in the Chinese Super League since he started coaching in 2014.

Cannavaro’s appointment could prove to be a gamble for Everton, given his inexperience in Europe. However, there is no question regarding the former defender’s credibility at the top level of the game for almost twenty years.
