Italy Legend Vialli Hospitalized While Battling Cancer

Gianluca Vialli has been hospitalized at a London clinic as he continues his bout against pancreatic cancer. He was recently visited by his elderly mother, Maria Teresa, his brother Nino, and his close friend former footballer Massimo Mauro, among others. His family members headed back to Italy for Christmas.

The iconic striker is conscious but very weak as he’s going through a delicate stretch, Corriere della Sera informs. He recently suspended his activity as head of the delegation of the Italian national team.

“After a long and challenging negotiation with my wonderful team of oncologists, I have decided to halt, hopefully temporarily, my present and future professional commitments. I have to help my body get past this phase of the disease.”

Vialli first revealed the diagnosis in 2017.

“You almost feel a sense of shame, as if what happened to you is your fault. I used to wear a sweater under the shirt, so others couldn’t notice anything.”

Vialli resides in London and is spending time at the hospital where he previously had two cycles of chemotherapy. According to SportMediaset, he’s not in immediate danger, even though his family and the doctors have been understandably private about his condition. They haven’t issued official updates. There has been an outpouring of support for the legend from the whole football world. The Juventus fan hung a banner outside the Stadium, hailing his fighting spirit.
