Italy Need to Finish Strong to Qualify for Euro 2024

Italy complicated their path to the Euro 2024 by losing to England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday. They are still in control of their own destiny but will need positive results against North Macedonia and Ukraine to be sure, Fanpage relays.

The Azzurri are now three points behind second place but have a game in hand. England have officially punched their ticket to Germany with their latest win.

Italy must collect four points in the final two games to qualify for certain. It doesn’t matter when the draw comes. Instead, if they lost to North Macedonia, they’d have to beat Ukraine to draw level. They have an advantage in the head-to-head clashes.

Things would get murky if they prevailed in the next game and then lost to the Blue and Yellow. The result would determine which team goes through. The Azzurri won 2-1 in the previous clash between the two sides. The opponents would need a larger victory to surpass them.

The goal difference would come into play in case of a narrow defeat for Luciano Spalletti’s side, which currently holds a minimal lead in that regard. However, they’d build on it in the penultimate contest in such a scenario.

Italy wouldn’t be eliminated if they finished behind Ukraine but would have to go through the playoffs. They have a very checkered history with those. Only 3 out of 12 participants advance.
