Gianluca Scamacca wasn’t on the scoresheet as Italy squeaked past Bosnia & Herzegovina 1-0 in their last friendly ahead of Euro 2024. Despite delivering another unconvincing performance, Luciano Spalletti’s team claimed a precious win to bolster their morale ahead of the Germany showpiece.
Scamacca wasted several decent chances on Sunday after missing out on a scoreless draw against Turkey in midweek. Still a bit rusty after playing a prominent role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph in 2023/24, the Italy international insists he doesn’t care about the numbers as long as he helps Gli Azzurri achieve their goals.
“I had a few attempts, we created chances, and we need more for the very important, wonderful, and prestigious tournament that is coming up,” Scamacca told Sky Sport Italia, as relayed by TMW. “I do not need to score in order to feel like myself. I am happy to play for the team, as an assist to send someone clear is just as good for me.”
Scamacca is adamant Italy must improve to bolster their chances of making it out of a ‘group of death’ at Euro 2024.
“We need to improve, as we are a young team, quite new and everyone is accustomed to doing different things, but I saw some positive signs today.“
Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. The team has undergone profound changes since lifting the Euro 2020 title, with many players from the title-winning squad no longer in the fold.
But Scamacca and his teammates can still draw inspiration from their rich footballing heritage as they bid to upset the odds in Germany.
