Italy U19 Captain Missori Wishes to Repay Sassuolo Trust

Italy U19 captain Filippo Missori, who recently signed for Sassuolo from youth club Roma, expects to grow leaps and bounds with the Neroverdi, as he prepares to lead the Azzurrini in the UEFA U19 European Championship in Malta. Missorri moved to Emilia-Romagna alongside Giallorrosi teammate Cristian Volpato in a transfer worth a combined €10M, plus a 15% sell-on clause in favor of Roma.

Speaking to Corriere dello Sport (via SassuoloNews), Missori dished about what to expect from the Azzurrini, and spoke of his future in Serie A.

“We like to define ourselves as the Italy of smiles and we are here to go all the way. It is a tough group (with Malta, Portugal and Poland). We are used to starting as underdogs, but in this blue family we support each other. It is our European Championship, after missing the U17 Championships due to Covid.”

Missori made Roma debut on 25 November 2021, as he replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the last 10 minutes in a 4-0 win against Zorya Luhansk in the Conference League. He made his Serie A debut couple of months back, in a 2-0 defeat to Inter at home. So far, Missori has garnered three senior caps.

“I feel grown up. With the grown-ups you can’t afford to be one who plays on tiptoe. You have to enter strong. Mou is special, he has won everything and continues to be a master for the young. He loves his players and always protects them.”

The young Azzurri right-back hopes to have an impressive season with Sassuolo in 2023/24.

“I hope so. Here the young players grow up with the right pressure, they aren’t attacked like they are elsewhere. Sassuolo really wanted me and I want to repay their trust with a super season.”

Missori is the first 2004-born footballer to player for an Italian club in a European competition.
