SPAL midfielder Matteo Prati was inches away from sealing the deal with Serie B outfit Palermo but has instead rejected the Rosanero in a bid to materialize his plans of developing in the top flight. Newly-promoted Cagliari are now in pole position to sign Prati from SPAL.
According to Sky Italia, despite SPAL already having agreed terms with Palermo, Prati is set to turn them down and choose Cagliari instead, with whom he reportedly has struck a verbal agreement. Prati, who starred for the Azzurrini in the FIFA U20 World Cup, where Italy finished runners-up, revealed his intention to star in the top tier if the opportunity arose instead of going via the second tier.

Cagliari will pay SPAL €7m including add-ons. 19-year-old Prati left Serie D side Ravenna for Serie B last summer to play at SPAL, as the Ferrara outfit suffered a 19th-place finish and ended up in Serie C.
The Italy U20 star will become Cagliari’s seventh summer signing, following the acquisitions of Jakub Jankto, Eldor Shomurodov, Tommaso Augello, Gaetano Oristanio, Simone Scuffet, and Ibrahim Sulemana.
