Recent Jersey Number Switches Ominous for Pogba Return at Juventus

Two Juventus regulars have decided to change their jersey numbers ahead of the 2021/2022 season. Danilo will don #6, while Juan Cuadrado has chosen #11. It has not gone unnoticed among Juventus fans that the Brazilian defender picked the old Paul Pogba number, La Gazzetta dello Sport pointed out.

The French midfielder has worn it in his first three seasons in Turin, at Manchester United, and with France. He was given #10 in his final year with the Bianconeri for commercial reasons after the departure of Carlos Tevez.

Juventus have been pursuing a reunion with Pogba for a couple of years. However, factoring in also his wages, it is believed that the only way it could really happen is in a swap with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese ace was non-committal about his future in a presser Monday: “Whether I will stay or leave, it will be for the best. The Euro is what matters the most right now.” There are no ongoing negotiations for his sale at this stage, Gianluca Di Marzio reported.

Danilo moved on from #13, which is the preferred number of Alessio Romagnoli. The center-back has been mildly linked to Juventus because of his tenuous contractual situation at Milan. Sami Khedira, who rescinded in January, held #6 beforehand.

Cuadrado abandoned #16 after three years, while he had #7 in his previous stint with Juventus. He admitted that the choice was random when he first got it. The #11 jersey belonged to Douglas Costa last summer. The two newly assigned numbers have historical meaning as they were donned for a long time by Juventus legends Gaetano Scirea and Pavel Nedved.
