José Mourinho Contacted Gianluigi Donnarumma to Talk Him into Roma

Gianluigi Donnarumma will be without a team in a month, and Roma tried to join the race to sign him for free. José Mourinho personally called him to ask if he would be willing to join Roma. The goalkeeper answered that his future is in the hands of Mino Raiola, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

The agent is convinced he will be able to get a long-term €10M per year contract for his client. However, the most likely landing spots, Barcelona and Juventus, already have quality starters on the roster. The Bianconeri, in particular, are trying to find a buyer for Wojciech Szczesny in the Premier League before making the final push for Donnarumma.

It is unlikely that the former Milan player will end up at Roma, but the coach tested the ground to make them a fallback plan. They are looking for a new goalkeeper as Pau Lopez, besides providing uneven performances, will miss the start of the next season due to shoulder surgery.

They have been linked to few specialists represented by Jorge Mendes, primarily Wolverhampton’s Rui Patricio. During the recent talks, Raiola offered them Alphonse Areola, who is back at PSG after a loan spell at Fulham.

The Giallorossi are also negotiating a new deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan with the super agent. The Armenian attacker could have extended his current one by picking up a bilateral clause yesterday, which the club had activated. Instead, he let it lapse to start discussing a new two-year deal amid the interest coming from Zenit and Monaco.
