Roma will enter October’s international break in a buoyant mood after racking up a three-game winning run in the wake of an infamous Genoa mauling. Jose Mourinho’s resurgent side thumped newly-promoted Cagliari 4-1 at Unipol Domus on Sunday evening to climb up the ladder in Serie A following a dismal start.
Back-to-back multiple-goal margin victories to sign off for the international window catapulted Roma to 10th in the Serie A table. Though their current position looks anything but promising, Giallorossi are only six points behind the top-four pace. The more important thing for Mourinho is that today’s thrashing of Cagliari has probably saved his skin.
Mourinho’s inflammatory statement over a potential switch to the Saudi Pro League in the run-up to his team’s trip to Sardinia has fuelled speculation over his future. Several media outlets in Italy went as far as to claim Roma would sack the Special One should he drop points against the division’s worst-performing team.
Romelu Lukaku’s brace, followed by goals from Andrea Belotti and Houssem Aoaur, saved Mourinho’s job and moved Roma closer to achieving their seasonal target. After sacrificing domestic ambitions for a busted Europa League quest last term, Giallorossi have set their sights on a top-four finish in Serie A this season.
Mourinho confirmed that after the game, admitting he is satisfied with the manner in which Roma responded to a 4-1 thumping at Genoa a fortnight ago.
“I’m very happy to have won the game, certainly not for the eleven points won so far,” Mourinho said, as quoted by Tuttomercatoweb. “But we are there, we are not far from the places where we have the ambition to be,” the Roma boss continued.
“We are balanced, we have won three games in a row after Genoa.“
