Juventus and Roma Monitoring Empoli Highly-Rated Goalie

Guglielmo Vicario has confirmed to be one of the top goalkeepers in Serie A in the first stretch of the season, and Roma and Juventus have begun tracking him for the future. Both sides have shot-stoppers that are well in their 30s.

As per Il Tirreno (via Calciomercato), the Old Lady and the Giallorossi have joined Galatasaray among the clubs that are closely following the 26-year-old. Empoli spend €8.5M to buy him out from Cagliari last summer, eyeing a future profit.

It didn’t happen right away despite the courtships of Lazio and Fiorentina. The Azzurri didn’t budge from their double-digit requests. The two suitors eventually opted for different targets, with mixed results. The Biancocelesti signed Ivan Provedel and Luis Maximiano, while the Gigliati onboarded Pierluigi Gollini.

The gamble paid off for Empoli, as Vicario continued to show off, and they will rake in more money if he joined either Roma or Juventus, or another side, in 2023. He has allowed 19 goals and kept 3 clean sheets in 12 matches so far.

The goalie didn’t debut, but he was called up by Italy coach Roberto Mancini for the most recent Nations League matches. He arrived late to Serie A, as 2020/2021 was his first season in the top league.

Our Take on Roma and Juventus Eyeing Vicario

The rumors about the Bianconeri seeking a shot-stopper are starting to intensify. The eventual decision to move on from Wojciech Szczesny might be more economical than technical. With the Azzurri star, they would get similar, if not better, performances at a fraction of the salary. Rui Patricio has been okay for the capital side but not exactly a difference-maker, so they might look to upgrade if the price is right.
