Juventus and Roma Starlets Make Golden Boy Shortlist

Serie A is well-represented in the 2022 edition of the Golden Boy, which just cut down its list from 80 to 40 candidates. Though, the players starring in Italy aren’t among the frontrunners considering the stacked pool.

The yearly award has been organized TuttoSport since 2013, with journalists from all over the world contributing with their votes. Seven Italian starlets have made the penultimate cut, with the final coming next month. The list comprises Juventus midfielder Fabio Miretti, Roma wing-back Nicola Zalewski and Destiny Udogie, whom Tottenham acquired and loaned back to Udinese in the summer.

Lazio newcomer Matteo Cancellieri, Atalanta center-back Giorgio Scalvini, Willy Gnonto, who moved to Leeds United on deadline day, and Sebastiano Esposito, who’s now at Anderlecht, round out the Azzurri corps. La Dea’s prodigy Rasmus Hojlund is the only foreign Serie A representative.

Pedri won the Golden Boy award last season and is in the running again. He’s among the favorites, alongside his teammate Gavi. The Barcelona duo faces competition especially from Real Madrid budding star Eduardo Camavinga and Bayern winger Jamal Musiala.

Several protagonists of the recent transfer market window are part of the field. For instance, Mathys Tel, who moved to Bavaria in a stunningly expensive move considering his inexperience, or Benjamin Sesko and Jasko Gvardiol, who remained part of the Red Bull conglomerate despite outside interest, and Ryan Gravenberch, whom Bayern purchased from Ajax.

The other most recognizable names are Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, Barcelona’s Ansu Fati, PSG’s Nuno Mendes, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Piero Hincapie, whom Milan and Roma tied to lure.
