Szczesny Formally Announces His Retirement from Football

UPDATE: A couple of weeks after coming to terms on a mutual partying of the ways with Juventus, Wojciech Szczesny announced that he’s walking away from the game with a heartfelt post on Instagram, passing on the opportunity to join exotic leagues.

Juventus had made their choice early in the summer, but they have struggled to find a new club for him afterward. The parties solved the impasse in the easiest way: rescinding the contract a year in advance.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the goalie will be free to mull his options, but it’s not certain he’ll keep playing. He has drawn interest from Monza, Saudi Arabia, and the MLS. However, the Brianzoli’s CEO Adriano Galliani alluded he wouldn’t sign for them.

“We don’t want to be deceiving. I know what he’ll do, but I’m not authorized to say it at this stage.”

Juventus will pay nearly €4M to part ways with Szczesny. It’s a sizeable sum but less than what he’s owed for the final year of his deal. The Bianconeri also intend to offload Federico Chiesa, Arthur, Mattia De Sciglio, Daniele Rugani, Filip Kostic, and Tiago Djaló. Their combined gross salaries amount to roughly €40M.

The Pole has spent seven seasons in Turin, succeeding Gianluigi Buffon and accumulating over 252 appearances, and lifting three Scudetto, among other trophies.

Our Take on Juventus and Szczesny

The Bianconeri aren’t new to unceremonious exits, and their scorched-earth campaign in that regard this summer isn’t going too great. It’ll be interesting to see if they’ll do something similar also with younger players. The decision to move on from him was more economically driven than technical, as he was still reliable in the last season. Therefore, it’d be surprising if he hung his gloves, but some players like to go out well. He was all class and showed it until the end.
