Juventus Fringe Defender Could Fill In for Cristian Romero at Atalanta

The destinies of Cristian Romero and Merih Demiral could be intertwined. If the former joined Tottenham or another team, the Juventus center-back could take his place at Atalanta. The Turk is eager to get more playing time and would easily agree to the transfer, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Spurs have now leapfrogged Manchester United in the race for the Argentinian international. However, they have yet to place a bid that satisfies Atalanta. President Luca Percassi recently admitted: “Our principle is that the sales must make us stronger and not weaker. He had an exceptional season, so it is normal for him to have some suitors. However, we gave him the right context to grow, play in Champions League, and be called up for Copa America.”

The official added: “It would not necessarily take an insane bid to sign him, just one that truly corresponds to his value.” According to Corriere della Sera, Tottenham offered €30M and Davinson Sanchez, and the Orobici are lukewarm on it. Atalanta previously turned down a €45M proposal by the Red Devils, as they were looking for more money.

If the Bergamaschi really sold Romero, they would try to substitute him with Demiral, whom coach Gian Piero Gasperini suggested directly. Juventus would like to get €35/40M for him, but the two sides could come to terms on a lower fee. In the meantime, Gianluca Frabotta will soon move to Atalanta on loan with option to buy. He will back up Robin Gosens on the left-wing, as Matteo Ruggeri will join Salernitana, both outlets inform.
